Can luxury watches go underwater?

It is a great day to be at the lake, the beach, or the river. Which makes me think, “Can luxury watches go underwater?” Like many things in life, it depends. They are rated and pressure-tested to different depths, depending on the design and construction of the watch. But can you really go as deep as they are rated? Again, it depends.

The depth printed on a watch’s dial or caseback does NOT mean that you can reasonably expect to use your watch at that depth. In perhaps the most common example, a watch marked 30m/100ft water resistant cannot be expected to operate repeatedly or for long periods of time underwater, and definitely not 100 feet below the surface. Why in the world would this be? It is because the water resistance test was conducted just once, with static pressure, on only a small sample of a brand’s newly manufactured watches. It does not take into account moving water, chlorinated water, salt water, or extended use.

So, a watch marked Water Resistant to 30m/100ft is really only splash resistant, and not suitable for showering, bathing or swimming. One marked Water Resistant to 50m/165 feet is suitable for swimming, but not anything real vigorous. If your watch is marked water resistant to 100m/330 feet, now you are good for swimming, surfing, snorkeling, rafting, and water sports.
